Registration & Fees

Wedding approval issued by the Danish Agency of Family Law (AFL) is valid for 4 months, it is recommended that you send your wedding application less than 4 months from the intended wedding date. If you don’t get married within the four months of your wedding approval, a new application will be needed, and new fees will apply.

If you are a citizen from a visa-free country, you do not need a visa for the wedding application, however you will need to present a valid entry stamp into a Schengen country before the wedding day. If you are a citizen from a visa-required country, then you will need the Danish or Schengen visa for the wedding application and in this case, your wedding approval will be valid for the period of your Danish or Schengen visa. Check if you need a visa for Denmark HERE.

The Danish Agency of Family Law (AFL) will check for potential fake documentation and suspicious applications that could indicate sham marriages. Should it be necessary to investigate an application further, you may be invited for an interview in person in Denmark before they give feedback on your application.

Wedding Process

No, the City Hall already provides 2 witnesses for your wedding. However, the availability may differ in each City Hall and we will advise you of any differences during the consultancy.

The statutory matrimonial property regime is the community of property in which everything the spouses own at the time they enter marriage or acquire later becomes a part of their joint property. It clearly states that the law that couples must stick to is the place of habitual residence, therefore when you move and register the marriage in your place of residence then the regime that will follow will be that of the place where you live. However, the spouses may choose to do a full or partial pre-nuptial agreement on separate property with a solicitor in their country of residence.

In Copenhagen, for the standard wedding (no extra fee), the availability of dates is usually 2-3 months from the approval date. For the speedy wedding (with an extra fee), we can schedule the wedding for 4-6 weeks after approval.
In Ærø Town Hall, we can schedule your wedding for 3-5 weeks after approval. There, it's only the standard option; the speedy wedding is not available.
