Get Married in Denmark

Denmark is a Scandinavian country comprising the Jutland Peninsula and an archipelago of more than 400 islands to the east. Owner of 7 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, with beautiful castles and some of the prettiest towns and villages, Denmark offers a variety of things to do throughout the entire year whatever your preferences are.

Couples may find themselves considering getting married in Denmark for varied reasons, either because they face lengthy administrative processes in their country of residence, or because they are looking for a different place to hold their ceremony, or for any other reason, Denmark has become one of the most attractive countries for weddings in Europe where over 15,000 couples get married every year.

You can get married in Denmark with as little as 2 nights in the country as your multilingual marriage certificate is given to you straight after the wedding.

Copenhagen is the capital and most populous city of Denmark. The city is linked to Malmo in southern Sweden by the Öresund Bridge. Capital of Architecture 2023, the city’s historic centre contains Frederiksstaden, an 18th-century rococo district, home to the royal family’s Amalienborg Palace. Nearby is Christiansborg Palace and the Renaissance-era Rosenborg Castle, surrounded by gardens and home to the crown jewelleries.

In the heart of Copenhagen, you will find Copenhagen City Hall which was built in 1892-1905 and was designed by architect Martin Nyrop who was inspired by the town halls of Italy, and the building is today considered as a classic of the National Romantic style. The National Romantic features shine throughout the building – from the richly decorated exterior to the detailed interior with hidden gems hidden in everything from murals to stair railings.

Standard Wedding

Your ceremony at Copenhagen City Hall will take place in the beautiful Wedding Hall on the first floor with a view of the Great Hall. The walls are painted with scenes from old Danish folklore about courting and proposals, and the lights are dimmed to create a warm atmosphere. The room is a perfect setting for a small, intimate ceremony for just the two of you or with your nearest and dearest.

This option may be available around two months after the wedding approval and there is no extra cost.

Open-Air Wedding

Say “I do” at an intimate and memorable open-air ceremony in one of the capital’s iconic and spectacular locations. At an open-air wedding, the ceremony is the same as at City Hall, just under the open skies or in new, different surroundings. On pre-determined date and locations such as Tivoli Gardens, Amager Beach Park, Opera House, on even during a jazz cruise on a boat and many more.

Ærø is Denmark’s most romantic island and is located in the lower part of the South Funen Archipelago, so you can only reach it by sea. Hop on board one of the five ferries and enjoy losing touch with reality for a moment. You can also sail yourself and take in marina life in one of the four marinas. The town of Ærøskøbing, on the north side, has brightly painted houses and cobbled streets. Its Bymuseum recalls the town’s maritime history and has traditional costumes and antique toys. Nearby, sandy Vesterstrand is dotted with colourful beach huts. In the southeast, the town of Marstal’s waterfront is home to the Maritime Museum, displaying over 130 ships in bottles.

It clearly states that the law that couples must stick to is the place of habitual residence, therefore when you move and register the marriage in your place of residence then the regime that will follow will be that of the place where you live. However, the spouses may choose to do a full or partial pre-nuptial agreement on separate property with a solicitor in their country of residence.
