IRP Renewal in Ireland 2026

What You Need to Know for 2026

🌍 If you live in Ireland with an Irish Residence Permit (IRP) or need to renew your permission, understanding the renewal process is essential. Recent changes have made the system more digital and streamlined, but there are key steps and requirements you must follow to avoid delays.

What Changed in the IRP Renewal Process?

Since November 4, 2024, all IRP renewals across Ireland have moved exclusively online through the Immigration Service Delivery (ISD) portal. This means no more in-person appointments for renewals, making the process more accessible and transparent.

Additionally, as of January 13, 2025, the ISD fully took over first-time registrations, but for renewals, the online method is already in place. These updates aim to reduce bureaucracy and improve efficiency for residents.

Step-by-Step Guide to Renew Your IRP

Once approved, your new IRP card will be delivered by post to your registered address (including Eircode).

Check Your Eligibility

You must be in Ireland when submitting your application.

Your current permission should still be valid or close to expiry. If expired for more than six months, you may need a new registration instead of a renewal.

Start Your Online Application

Access the ISD portal and log in or create an account.

Select “Registration Renewal” and complete the form.

Upload required documents: ✔️ Current IRP card ✔️ Passport (biometric page) ✔️ Proof of address ✔️ Additional documents depending on your permission type

Pay the applicable fee online.

Track Your Application

After submission, you’ll receive an OREG number to monitor your status.

Tips for a Smooth Renewal

✔️ Apply early – up to 12 weeks before expiry.

✔️ Ensure your address is correct – include Eircode for delivery.

✔️ Upload clear, legible scans – blurry documents can delay processing.

Special Notes for Students (Stamp 2)

If you’re renewing as a language student:

  • Your new course must be on the ILEP list and last at least 25 weeks.
  • Maintain 85% attendance in your previous course.
  • Provide proof of full payment for the new course and valid health insurance.
  • Maximum stay on English courses: 2 years (3 courses of 8 months).

Why This Matters

The IRP is your proof of legal residence in Ireland. Failing to renew on time can affect your ability to work, study, or even travel. With the new online system, the process is simpler—but preparation is key.
