Irish Naturalisation for Spouses and Civil Partners of Irish Citizens
Overview
Irish citizenship through marriage is not automatic. However, an eligible spouse or recognised civil partner of an Irish citizen may apply for citizenship by naturalisation under the three-year residence route.
The marriage or civil partnership must have lasted for at least three years. The relationship must also be genuine and continuing, and the couple must be living together when the application is submitted and when naturalisation is granted.
Applicants normally require three years of reckonable residence on the island of Ireland during the previous five years, including one continuous qualifying year immediately before applying. MWeds reviews the applicant’s immigration history, relationship evidence, identity documents and residence records before helping prepare the online application.
Naturalisation remains at the discretion of the Minister for Justice. Therefore, satisfying the relationship, residence and documentary requirements does not guarantee approval. There is no formal appeal procedure following a refusal, although an eligible person may submit a new application.
Applicants who do not qualify through marriage or civil partnership may need to use the standard five-year residence route.
Criteria For Applying
- Are of full age (aged 18 or over)
- Are married with an Irish National for a minimum of 3 years
- Meet the relevant conditions for residence (stamps that are reckonable for naturalisation)
and prove the 150 points of residence per year - Intend to reside in the State
- Are of good character
- Will attend a citizenship ceremony and make the declaration of fidelity
The citizenship application fee is currently 175 euros and the certification fee is currently 950 euros to be paid at the end of the process.
If we cancel the process, can we get a refund of the paid fees?
No, all fees are non-refundable, non-exchangeable for other services and non-transferrable to other people in any circumstance. Please note that the onus is on you, the applicant, to provide all the necessary information and documentation in a timely manner once the process starts.
Does MWeds help gather the documents?
MWeds reviews the documents provided and advises whether further evidence is required. However, the applicant remains responsible for obtaining and providing the necessary documents.
Document Submission, Certification and Review
Secure document submission
All requested documents must be uploaded through the secure shared folder provided by MWeds after the consultancy begins.
Independent document certification
Certification of supporting documents is not included in the MWeds consultancy service and is not carried out by MWeds.
Where certification is required, we can recommend an appropriate independent provider. The client remains responsible for arranging the certification and paying any associated costs.
Review within seven working days
Once all requested documents and information have been uploaded, MWeds may take up to seven working days to complete the document review.
If further documentation or clarification is required, the client will be informed following the review.
Can MWeds analyse the documents or send me the list of documents before we start the consultancy? No, MWeds cannot accept any documents or send a list of documents before we start the consultancy. We will not analyse any documents before we start the consultancy officially.
After the payment, when can I start the consultancy?
We can start immediately; however, the consultancy agreement expires after 6 months from its purchase if the requested information or documents are not provided within this timeframe. If you still want to proceed after that, a new consultancy must be purchased.
