Student Residence Permission Extension

Overview

A student permission extension in Ireland may be available to certain non-EEA students or recent student-permission holders who have been refused registration or renewal, have been referred to Domestic Residence and Permissions, or require a discretionary change or extension because of exceptional or unforeseen circumstances.

Who Should Use This Route?

  • A person in Ireland for study who holds, or held within the previous six months, Stamp 2, 2A, 1G or 1A and has been refused registration or renewal and referred to Domestic Residence and Permissions.
  • A person seeking a change of status because exceptional or unforeseen circumstances prevent the normal student-permission route from resolving the case.
  • A person who has finished the Student Pathway without obtaining an employment permit and can demonstrate exceptional circumstances.
  • A person who is still in permission, or who has been out of permission for less than six months, where the current official form permits the application.

Not a Routine Renewal

A normal eligible IRP renewal should use the national online renewal route. This discretionary application is for exceptional cases and does not guarantee an extension, a particular stamp, or a specific period of permission.

Application and Consultancy Process

  • MWeds sends a questionnaire and a tailored list of documents after the consultancy begins.
  • The applicant uploads the requested evidence to the shared digital folder.
  • When the file is complete, MWeds aims to review and prepare the application within seven working days.
  • MWeds submits the application through the applicable online route and provides confirmation of submission.
  • Immigration Service Delivery may request additional evidence before making a decision.
  • The consultancy begins with payment and continues until a final decision. An appeal or further application after refusal is not included.

Timeline, Permission and Work Rights

Immigration Service Delivery does not publish one standard decision time for every exceptional student-permission case. Timing depends on the circumstances, evidence required and official workload. If permission is granted, its stamp and validity are set in the decision.

Status While the Case Is Pending

Submitting a discretionary extension request does not automatically extend an expired permission or create a right to work, study, remain or travel. The applicant must follow the conditions of their current permission and any written direction from Immigration Service Delivery.
