A wedding in Gibraltar allows resident and non-resident couples to complete a civil marriage under a Special Licence.
Non-resident couples must satisfy the Gibraltar marriage requirements and stay in Gibraltar for at least one night immediately before or immediately after the ceremony.

Key Requirements
Gibraltar requires a minimum one-night stay, and all marriage paperwork must be submitted to the Civil Status and Registration Office (CSRO) at least one working day before the ceremony. Weddings can take place at the Registry Office or at several approved venues.
- Marriage in Gibraltar is legally recognised worldwide, but some countries require a Hague Apostille.
- You must prove a one-night stay in Gibraltar and submit this to the City Hall at least one working day before the wedding.
- Ceremonies can usually be booked for the following month, but availability is limited during the summer months from June to September.
- A special licence is required and is issued only with physical documents proving identity, age, and marital status.
- Required documents vary by couple and are confirmed after the consultancy payment.
- Weddings can be booked up to one year in advance, but changing the date after payment may involve an extra fee.
- Example documents may include a passport or ID, visas, birth certificate, marriage and divorce certificates, and other documents depending on your case.
- Nationals who require a visa will need to apply for a Schengen Visa to enter Gibraltar, stating “marriage” as the purpose of visit.

Language and Witnesses
The ceremony is held in English. If either person does not speak English with sufficient fluency to understand and answer during the ceremony, you must bring a translator. MWeds can arrange one at an extra cost. Two witnesses over the age of 18 must be present, understand English, and be acceptable to the Registrar. Registry Office personnel cannot act as witnesses. Witnesses are included as part of our service; if you bring your own witnesses, let MWeds know so the witness cost can be discounted from the wedding fee.
Wedding Days and Time
Marriage ceremonies at the Registry Office are conducted on weekdays between 11:00 and 14:00. The Registry Office has a maximum capacity of 15 people.
Can I choose the regime of property for the wedding?
- The default matrimonial property regime is community of property, meaning all assets owned or acquired during the marriage are shared.
- The applicable law is based on the couple’s habitual residence. Once the marriage is registered there, that country’s regime applies.
- Couples may choose to sign a full or partial prenuptial agreement for separate property with a solicitor in their country of residence.
Marriage Certificate
Marriage certificates are not delivered immediately. They take about 15 working days to be issued, plus postal delivery time, and the overall wait can be up to 40 days. You will also receive a letter after the marriage confirming that you got married; this is usually sufficient to return to your country of residence and proceed through immigration.
